About
Our top-ranked physical therapy doctoral program recruits and selects highly-qualified individuals from the civilian sector to join the military and become officers in the US Army or the US Navy. Our program also selects applicants from within the active duty and reserve forces to transfer into our program from other military occupational specialties. Following basic officer initial entry training, these officers engage in 30 months of entry-level physical therapy training to receive the doctorate of physical therapy degree (DPT). Upon graduation, our graduates are well-prepared to serve in two unique professions - as an active-duty officer and as a military physical therapist.
This military physical therapy program is located at the historic Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and is the Home of Military Medicine. The Army - Baylor University DPT program is proud to be a part of the Army Medical Center of Excellence who share the mission to produce active duty, commissioned physical therapists who are clinician scientists and leaders prepared for worldwide military health system practice. Outstanding clinical sites nearby include San Antonio Military Medical Center, the Center for the Intrepid, Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and other excellent sites.
The purpose of this site is to provide prospective DPT students information on our CAPTE accredited DPT program. It also gives information to current military physical therapists and alumni with a resource about continuing education courses sponsored by the Army, Navy or Air Force.
Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, TX—The Army - Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy recently received reaffirmation of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). In its summary of action reaffirming the accredited status, CAPTE recognized that the program is in compliance with all of the standards and required elements. The program is “meeting its mission as evidenced by qualified faculty with advanced academic degrees, board certifications, and productive scholarly agendas; the use of data to drive program decisions; and the 100% student achievement rates.” Further, CAPTE commended the program for the thorough and professional manner in which the accreditation obligations were addressed. The self-study report, in particular, was comprehensive and clearly conveyed the nature and scope of the educational experience at Army-Baylor DPT.
The Army - Baylor DPT program continues the tradition and necessity of training physical therapists for military service that started with the Reconstruction Aides in 1918. Our program is located at the Army Medical Center of Excellence on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Students are awarded a Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy from Baylor University upon completing our program. Program applicants do not need to be in the military to apply. Once accepted to our 30 month program, however, selected applicants are commissioned as military officers, enter onto active duty and complete an officer orientation course within their respective services before beginning the program. The current class size is 32 students and they complete 124 semester hours in didactic and clinical education during the program.
The Army - Baylor DPT curriculum meets this mission by producing graduates who are ready to serve and provide high quality health care in complex, challenging clinical environments. Further, program faculty augment the educational preparation of students by engaging students in military relevant research projects that benefit military readiness and healthcare.

Since 1922, the US Army has trained physical therapists to meet the needs of injured soldiers. In 1971, the United States Army and Baylor University partnered to establish and conduct a graduate-level, physical therapy training program for the armed forces. Since that time, this program has continuously adapted to meet the physical therapy needs of the armed forces through excellence in academic coursework, clinical education, research and professional development of uniformed physical therapists.
