Didactic Coursework and Supervised Experiential Learning

24-Month Integrated Program – U.S. Army-Baylor Master’s Program in Nutrition

The U.S. Army-Baylor Master’s Program in Nutrition is a competency-based program that includes classroom learning and supervised experiential learning (SEL).  

  • Location: Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston, TX
  • Duration: 24 months (66 credit hours) (1,350 Supervised Experiential Learning hours)

  • MPN 5309: Advanced Energy Metabolism (3 Cr: 3 DiD)
  • MPN 5407: Medical Nutr Therapy (MNT) I with Lab (4 CR: 3 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5314: Nutrition Care Process with Lab (3 Cr: 2 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5210: Research Methods I (2 Cr: 2 DiD)
  • MPN 5106: Scientific Writing (1 Cr: 1 DiD)

Sem 1 = 13 credit hours, 100 SEL hours (External Rotations: MNT)  

  • MPN 5315: Public Health I with Lab (3 Cr: 2 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5217: MNT II (2 CR: 2 DiD)
  • MPN 5522: Food Service & Management with Lab (5 Cr: 2 DiD/3 SEL)
  • MPN 5220: Research Methods II (2 Cr: 2 DiD)
  • MPN 5121: Research Project I (1 Cr: 1 DiD)

Sem 2 = 13 credit hours, 200 SEL hours (External Rotations: FSS, Community)  

  • MPN 5216: Exercise Physiology (2 Cr: 2 DiD)
  • MPN 5527: Advanced MNT I with Lab (5 CR: 2 DiD/3 SEL)
  • MPN 5110: Leadership I (1 Cr: 1 DiD)
  • MPN 5231: Research Project II with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)

Sem 3 = 10 credit hours, 200 SEL hours (External Rotations: MNT)

  • MPN 5225: Public Health II with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5337: Advanced MNT II with Lab (3 CR: 1 DiD/2 SEL)
  • MPN 5336: Performance Nutrition with Lab (3 Cr: 2 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5120: Leadership II (1 Cr: 1 DiD)
  • MPN 5241: Research Project III with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)

Written & Oral Comprehensive Exams

Sem 4 = 11 credit hours, 250 SEL hours (External Rotations: MNT, Community)  

  • MPN 5245: Military Nutrition Operations with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5130: Leadership III (1 CR: 1 DiD)
  • MPN 5240: Experiential Practice I (Lab - 100 hours) (2 Cr: 2 SEL)
  • MPN 5251: Research Project IV with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5346: Human Performance Optimization with Lab (Inter-professional Collaboration) (3 Cr: 2 DiD/1 SEL)

Sem 5 = 10 credit hours, 250 SEL hours

  • MPN 5235: Organizational Stewardship with Lab (2 Cr: 1 DiD/1 SEL)
  • MPN 5450: Experiential Practice II (Lab - 200 hours) (4 CR: 4 SEL)
  • MPN 5361: Research Project V with Lab (3 Cr: 1 DiD/2 SEL)

Sem 6 = 9 credit hours, 350 SEL hours

*1 Supervised Experiential Learning (SEL) Credit Hour = 50 hours SEL

Grade Requirements

  1. Must maintain a 3.0 GPA (All semesters)​.
  2. Must meet competencies on the nine-point scale for ACEND competencies (All semesters)​.
  3. Must pass a comprehensive oral and written examination (Semester 4)​.
  4. Must pass a written research project and oral platform presentation (Semester 6).​

*A Master of Science degree is awarded after the student’s Research Committee approves the final written project and oral presentation.​*
